Between 1995-1997, Prof. Dr. Buer wrote his dissertation under Prof. Dr. Claude Kaspar at the University of St. Gallen on the subject of “Design of Holistic Management Systems in Hotels – The Importance of Information Needs and their Acquisition and Processing for a Management System in a Holistic Hotel Operation” completed (Dr. oec HSG).

In June 1998 Prof. Dr. Buer, as Group Director of Marketing Services & Development for the Arabella Sheraton joint venture, was responsible for hotel development, acquisition and cross-group marketing for each hotel operation.

At the turn of the millennium, Prof. Dr. Buer joined the FUNDUS Hotelentwicklungs- und Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH on 1 January 2000. In this function he took over

the responsibilities for all hotel activities of the FUNDUS Group, represented and supervised their projects and hotel operations, which include well-known companies such as the Hotel Adlon in Berlin, the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm, the Renaissance in Atlanta or the Quellenhof in Aachen.

Since 2004 Prof. Dr. Buer is a regular professor of business administration at Heilbronn University and teaches about the most important questions for tourism companies, especially hotels. From December 2006 to October 2009, as dean, he headed the entire service-oriented Business Faculty 2 (now the Faculty of International Business). Today, he is a department manager for the tourism industry, which includes three study programmes (Bachelor Tourism Management, Bachelor Hotel and Restaurant Management, Master International Tourism Management) and Pro-Dean of the Faculty of International Business.
